Recycling Role Plays - Theo Pryce - 07-29-2022
Hello friends.
We had an incident recently where someone "Recycled" a role play. Recycling a role play can take many forms and I am not going to list them all here but this practice is generally frowned upon. In many places it is a stated rule in others, such as this one it is an unwritten rule. To my knowledge it has not happened here before so we never felt the need to explicitly state that one should not do that. Until now. The who's, where's, why's and what's of it all are not really important but it did happen and as such we are going to implement a rule which will state the following:
Quote:- Recycling of Role Plays is forbidden. What constitutes as recycling a Role Play? Using a previously posted Role Play but changing some things around to make it slightly different and passing it off as a new Role Play. Using a Role Play from another fed and making some changes to make it XWF specific and passing it off as new is also off limits. Doing this will result in your roleplay being disqualified. If it happens a second time you will be removed from the fed.
I wanted to let you all know this change was going into effect but also to get your thoughts on this practice. Do you see it as a big deal, do you not see it as a big deal? Truly I'd love to get your thoughts on it.

I had always assumed this was a rule honestly. Or at least an expectation.
But yes, it does very much need to be "a thing".

This is usually the part where I'd ask a follow-up question about some weird edge-case scenario, but I feel like the rule as written above is straightforward and non-punitive for good-faith storytelling devices.
If you re-wrote an old RP from a different character's perspective and used bits from the old RP to set the scene as such, that would be sufficiently transformative to constitute a new piece. Even if you did a 80s sitcom-style clip show, where you took some significant bits from your old pieces, it could arguably be transformative in a way that juxtaposing these new pieces might evoke some different meaning.
Buuuuuuut copy-pasting an old story with minor edits is pretty obviously bad-faith RPing, designed to dodge having to write as much in a cycle.
All in all, makes sense to me!

I think that if you're recycling stuff it probably won't be as good as what you could have written otherwise, so it will likely be reflected in the score.
Of course, I also love adding more rules to things, so I'm fully on board either way.

I have always been of the belief that this should be a given, but have also seen this being a rule in effect.
I have never done it before and won't do it now, but if an express rule serves to deter people from trying it, it will be fine by me.

Not gonna lie, my first thought was; "I should totally start writing the same RP over and over, but with different words". That said, this is a no brainer for most, but It's great that it is now a written rule for the few that might not realize for one reason or another.
