I don't mean to sound like a snob, but if anyone enjoys the show but hasn't read the books, I'd definitely recommend reading the books. The first three are absolute classics, seriously, they're some of the best fantasy fiction ever written. The fourth and fifth vary from passably mediocre to just as good as the predecessors, dependent on which character is going through which event.

The only real problem is that at this point it's anyone's guess if GRRM will actually finish the series. That's a very heated debate in and of itself.
